Cos’è l’Archivio di un artista?

Si potrebbe dire che, in sintesi, esso sia una raccolta, ragionata e sistematica di tutto il materiale in grado di documentare la vita, il processo creativo e la carriera di un artista.
Tuttavia, in realtà, un archivio è molto di più. L’archivio assume il ruolo di custode della memoria storica dell’artista, preservando le sue opere, in primis, ma anche le dinamiche contestuali e personali che ne hanno gemmato la creazione. Un archivio racchiude anche bozzetti, studi, prove d’autore, schizzi, fotografie, diari, scritti, corrispondenze, tutte le pubblicazioni editoriali o materiali audiovisivi in grado di offrire una visione completa, ampia e profonda dell’opera di un artista.
Infine, l’Archivio è un luogo di memoria collettiva futura, esso garantisce che le generazioni a venire possano ricevere nel proprio bagaglio il patrimonio culturale dell’artista, così da poterne valorizzare lo studio e il contributo offerto al mondo dell’Arte.

What is an artist’s archive?

One could say that, in a nutshell, it is a reasoned and systematic collection of all the material that documents the life, creative process and career of an artist. However, in reality, an archive is much more than that. The archive assumes the role of the custodian of the artist’s historical memory, preserving his or her works, first and foremost, but also the contextual and personal dynamics that have shaped their creation. An archive also contains sketches, studies, author’s proofs, sketches, photographs, diaries, writings, correspondence, all editorial publications or audiovisual materials that can offer a complete, broad and profound vision of an artist’s work.
Finally, the Archive is a place of future collective memory, it ensures that generations to come will be able to receive the artist’s cultural heritage in their own baggage, so that their study and contribution to the world of Art can be enhanced.
